Spare Change

January 20, 2009

Well today is the day – today we “Change” or so goes the presidential sloganry of this wondrous year of ’09. Meanwhile, the bombs still go off, the country’s in shambles economically (and in general) and millions still shell out for the fast food solutions of our age. But! No matter. This is all soothed by a $160 million dollar party for this epic first in American politics. Hey, I’m all in and stand behind the ideals of our new leader but if memory serves, there have been plenty before him to advertise white picket fences, a dog for everyone, affordable flying cars, a good, safe future and lolly pops all around. I can’t help but go into this with pride in our country’s choice for a leader but fear that the machine of government will prevail in that the status quo will remain and that the nameless, behind-the-scenes generals of industry and wealth will reign in the “power” and the “change” to once again fortify their end.

Geez, when did even our most optimistic day turn into doubt? When did I give a damn to spend so much time writing about politics – something wholly out of my control anyway?

Regardless, it’s time to realize that the bottom dropped out, the war is still on, and $160 mil celebration or not, the gears of a beast beyond our control are still grinding. And still, I think we all use the Super Bowl elections to feed our mildest hopes and galvanize our faintest sincerity – whether our team wins or not, we still held a party, right? We still had our half-time show, we still got to eat gobs of pre-wrapped toxins and reveled in another glimmer of joy that we so reverently manufacture on this cell-phone tower-topped meatball of reality-junkies in an all out bender to impress the judges.
